Your High-Performance Engine Relies on the Exhaust Manifold

Your high-performance engine relies on the exhaust manifold to push the exhaust through to the catalytic converter and out of the exhaust system. If the exhaust builds up inside the engine, you will have serious performance issues. If you drive your high-performance engine when it is running too hot, you increase the risk of cracking the exhaust manifold. Excelerate Performance explains what happens next.

Reduced Performance

As we just mentioned, when the exhaust fills the engine, it reduces its performance. Unfortunately, a leaking exhaust manifold is going to fill the engine with exhaust gases. Consequently, you will not get the performance you should be getting out of your high-performance engine. In fact, you will notice a lag in the vehicle’s acceleration and its performance at higher speeds.

Reduced Fuel Economy

Anytime the engine’s performance is compromised there will be a reduction in the vehicle’s fuel economy. You need to get as many miles per gallon as you can out of a full tank in your high-performance vehicle, especially with gas prices on the continual rise. Unfortunately, if the engine is struggling to run, it will burn more fuel and reduce the fuel efficiency.

Noticeable Burning Odors

Speaking of burning, another thing that you will notice is burning odors coming from the engine if the manifold is leaking. This is because the exhaust is so hot that it is scorching. Consequently, it’s going to overheat the high-performance engine by increasing the temperature of all of the metal parts. The exhaust can be so hot that it can also melt rubber and plastic parts.

Noticeable Exhaust Odors

You may also smell the exhaust inside the high-performance vehicle. If you do, pull over and have the automobile towed to our shop. It’s important that you avoid driving your high-performance automobile because inhaling the exhaust can make you deathly ill.

Ignition Hissing or Tapping

Aside from using your nose to detect problems in the high-performance engine, you should also use your ears to listen for the exhaust leak in the manifold. When you first fire up the high-performance engine, the leaking exhaust will hiss or tap.

Check Engine Warning

Finally, all of the above will cause various system sensors throughout the engine and in the exhaust system to alert the engine control module of an exhaust problem. The module will be unable to fix the problem, and, as such, it will turn on the check engine light.
