Top Modification's for your MQB VW/Audi

So lets just say you bought a 2015+ VW/Audi with an MQB 2.0T TSI Gen 3 engine, whether it be in the form of an A3, S3, Golf, GTI, or Golf R and you probably never had this much fun out the box until now. The Volkswagen Audi Group is constantly pushing the envelope to stay ahead of the competition and they do a pretty darn good job in doing so. You may have noticed by now that the core group of buyers of the VAG market are enthusiasts. This means the likelihood of the buyer modifying the car is quite high. Why not right? VAG leaves a lot left on the table and it is almost a sin not to turn up the wick. Perhaps done intentionally? You decide. 😉

This is where the aftermarket comes into play. There are a countless amount of companies who have dedicated  their main practice to the VAG market. 1. Software

Software

The perfect compliment to your refined performance machine. Built to suit those who just want a bump in power or for those that want to “go all out”. These two breeds of customer have many things in common, just different end results. Software is one of and if not the most critical modification to tie together any hardware combination. APR provides a complete solution that is engineered from the ground up. Overall power, power delivery, drivability, and reliability are similar to that the factory software, so you can gain the power without losing the comfort of the vehicle. Changes can be found as deep as code level structure changes, changes this early in the development process allows APR’s engineers to add options not available on the stock ECU. From the base structure APR has created their own map composer, a 3D Visual map editor that allows the calibrators to make changes to the tables that enhance fuel, timing, boost etc and much more. Increased throttle response, significant increase in low end and top end torque and horsepower figures, increased speed limiter and motorsport style rev limiter. 2. Engine Hardware

Beyond Stage 1

Intake

So why is an intake on the top modification list when the factory filter and box works perfectly fine? Well there are many reasons albeit they might not be highly beneficial reasons but this list isn’t always going to apply to everyone. APR’s carbon fiber intake was meant to do exactly what it is presented to do; increase peak power, increase throttle response, release the awesome noises the turbo makes, and look good while doing so thanks to the tightly woven, and clear coated carbon fiber construction. So why else other than the dashing good looks and the marginal power gains?  APR has also designed their catch can system to seamlessly bolt right to the APR intake for a nice clean compact install.

Intake

Downpipe

What is the downpipe? The downpipe is simply the piping that connects the turbocharger to the rear of the exhaust. This section is where the catalytic converters are placed as well so it it is quite important. There is one cat placed right off the back of the turbocharger and another downstream underneath the car also known as the main cat. The pre cat  is what causes the majority of the disturbance in the exhaust system. The cat right off the turbo creates turbulence and back pressure, something turbos do not like. When adding an APR downpipe you remove that pre cat and retain a high flow converter in the downstream. This limits backpressure and increases flow considerably. Notable turbo spool up, throttle response and maintaining top end pull are characteristics of this modification.

Is increasing all of these characteristics really that simple? Maybe it was in the past, but the MQB’s ECU structure is far more complex now. The MQB ECU is based off a torque model of volumetric efficiency. What does that mean? So you just removed a catalytic converter and installed one that is high flow. The exhaust velocity is now increased, lets say 20%. In theory the engine is now 20% more efficient in expelling exhaust gasses. The ECU needs to now compensate many variables into creating the desired results by changing the model on the fly by adjusting timing, fueling and boost. This is something that can cause long term detrimental issues to the vehicle. Software meant to match the hardware is the best way to make the engine happy and acheive desired driveability results.

3. Intercooler

Intercooler

Heat soak stinks, most turbo or supercharged car owners can attest to this. It is most apparent if you drive your cars hard, live in very warm climates, even in high elevation areas. These cars require fresh, cool, dense air to be most efficient. When you have a performance machine that is making significantly more horsepower and torque over stock, some of the factory components cannot sustain continuous heat cycles. The intercooler is a prime example of a beneficial complimentary upgrade on the 2.0T TSI cars. It is not always about achieving “all the boost” but what power you can achieve with the boost you have.

Remember how advanced we mentioned these ECU’s are? Well, the amount of compensation and adjustment that can be done on the fly with these ECU’s is astonishing. In some scenarios, you may find the car is running less boost one day than it was previous. This is because the ECU has the ability dial back boost and increase timing, reason being is the ECU knows it can make more power with less boost. How awesome is that?

So what is heat soak? Heat soak occurs when the cooling system reaches its cooling potential. The compressed air from the turbocharger passes through the intercooler. The air is cooled via the intercooler as a air to air heat exchanger. The air goes in hot and comes out cool. From the outlet of the intercooler the air enters the engine. When the car reaches the point of heat soak from continuous aggressive driving, the intercooler no longer has the surface area to cool the air passing through it. Apr’s intercooler is significantly thicker than stock and uses a more advanced end tank design to disperse air evenly across the face of the intercooler core. Now with a larger surface area for cooling and better air distribution, the exchanger can now be more efficient and cooling more air by area.

 

  • The stock GTI intercooler is roughly 78% less efficient than the APR intercooler
  • The stock Golf R intercooler is roughly 62% less efficient than the APR intercooler.

So now that we have suspension under control but there is one last piece to the puzzle that will help you perfect your suspension setup. Maybe you may have noticed that your MK7 or 8V chassis likes to ride along the outer edge of the tires in hard cornering. Suspension helps but there is only so much negative camber you can achieve with natural geometry changes (lowering the car) without having adjustable plates. Since these cars do not have camber adjustment in factory form we have had to resort to using plates from Integrated Engineering built from aircraft grade billet aluminum and finished in anodized red, they look as god as they perform. Adding camber adjustment is almost  mandatory for those who want to completely dial in their suspension. These plates retain the factory style upper strut bearing too, so they are bolt on with any spring kit that uses the factory shock. These make a strikingly awesome setup paired with MSS spring kits.
